AVP: Shield Mates
A human woman is found and held for questioning concerning a rash of brutal murders, but she appears to have forgotten that she is human. A ragged journal is found with her, begun in Standard English, but finished in an alien language. The key to translating the entries is found in the front of the journal, and the translator reports on the strange tale recorded there, even as the murders mysteriously start up again.
A young yautja is betrayed by a peer during his rite of passage. Left for dead, and marked for death for failure if he should survive, he is abandoned on the human colony planet after the trials. Outraged at the coward who betrayed and doomed him, he vows revenge; but first, he must survive against the aliens and humans trapped on the planet with him. He gains an unusual ally and companion in the form of a human female, a former prisoner of her people. A bond develops between them that overshadows thoughts of vengeance, and the hope of regaining his place in the clan.
